LIRR Third Track Update - August 2020
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region's most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depend on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time. During the month of August, you will see crews performing construction activities in Garden City (completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19).
New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- The newly built U-structure for the New Hyde Park Road underpass was successfully installed over one weekend in July during a double track outage on the LIRR's Main Line. More information
- Construction crews are currently working to pour and form curbs at Greenridge Circle, at the end of Clinch Avenue, in conjunction with the new underpass
- In order to perform this work, access to Greenridge Circle will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic until approximately August 7
- The newly constructed roadway will be the site of a five-lane grade-separated underpass, with pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides of the roadway, as well as a dedicated left-turn lane from southbound New Hyde Park Road onto Clinch Avenue
- A new ADA-compliant pedestrian overpass on the south side of New Hyde Park Road safely connects the east and west sides of the roadway for commuters
- A new signal has been installed at Plaza Avenue and New Hyde Park Road to assist with the flow of traffic and until the new surface parking lot at 115 New Hyde Park Road is complete
- For the remainder of the closure, signage and detour plans are in place throughout the area.
Merillon Avenue Station Enhancement
- Work on Merillon Avenue Station is progressing as crews continue the installation of ADA-compliant elevators, ramps, stairs, and walkways
- Please board and exit all trains (westbound and eastbound) from the first six cars at Merillon Avenue Station and continue to utilize the temporary crosswalks along Main Avenue
- Some parking spots will remain unavailable at Merillon Avenue; replacement parking is provided north of Merillon Avenue Station, along Broadway between County Courthouse Road and Herricks Road, on the south side of the street
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- Crews from EJ Electric will continue to work during the day and overnight relocating cables from temporary poles to the permanent wooden and steel utility poles along the railroad right-of-way
- Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- 3TC is contractually committed to performing ongoing environmental monitoring including air quality, vibration levels, and noise levels
New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- Crews are continuing the progression of platforms on the north and south sides of the tracks
- Platform canopy brick enclosure is ongoing, with work occurring simultaneously on the new ADA-compliant stairs and ramps
- Work is expected to commence on the New Hyde Park Station house in August
- Construction is continuing on the north and south support buildings, which is necessary for the maintenance of the new station
- On the north and south side of the tracks, the walls of the South 12th Street Underpass have been formed with concrete. Future work underneath the tracks will connect the north and south sides of the pedestrian underpass
- Residents will see crews working both on weekends and overnight hours to meet the expedited construction schedule for this project element
- Commuters will continue to access a temporary 10-car platform, which runs along 2nd and 3rd Avenues, between South 12th Street and South 8th Street
- For the remainder of the work, signage and detours are in place to help customers access the station.

- Sound wall installation on the south side of the tracks is progressing from New Hyde Park Road heading east toward Tanners Pond Road
- Wall installation behind the homes along Greenridge Avenue is substantially complete. Crews are progressing work along the right-of-way behind the ballfield and Bird Sanctuary
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
