January 14 Mayor's Message: Subdivision Moratorium

Village News Items Posted on January 14, 2026

Couple of updates: (a) the Subdivision Moratorium Committee met recently and we spent significant time on the various options which we believe will result in improvements in the subject code language. Additionally, we will likely be doing away with “subdivision(s) as of right” and adding layers of review to any such request. It’s an important and not uncomplicated project. The initial six-month period is set to expire in mid-February 2026 and it’s not unlikely we will tap into the first three-month extension. I am happy to report...our committee is staffed with very talented folks; (b) Art. 78 litigation I, re: Nassau Coliseum grounds: we have filed a motion to reargue the Court’s finding that the Village did not have “standing”...i.e. our right to bring the action...to challenge the 42 year lease Nassau County, et.al., granted to LV Sands; litigation II. re: challenging the Town of Hempstead’s quite extra-ordinary zoning changes at the Coliseum grounds. It’s still in the early stages...we are awaiting the respondents’ (Town of Hempstead, et.al.) reply to the petition.; and, (c) we are also working on tightening the Village’s snow removal code provisions, as they appear to require updating.

NEW LIBRARY TRUSTEE

Garden City resident Carolyn Paparella took her oath of office this past Monday, after being unanimously approved by the BOT, to become the Library Board’s newest member. Ms. Paparella replaces longtime Trustee and former Chairman Randy Colahan. Trustee Paparella is an award-winning host, reporter and producer of media content, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunications at the University of Florida School of Journalism. She and her husband moved to the Village a year and a half ago. As a new mom, she looks forward to spending time at the library with her young son, as she once did during her early childhood in Winter Park, Florida. Here’s a warm welcome to Trustee Paparella, who joins fellow Library Board members Colleen Foley, chair; Mary Maguire, vice chair; Linda Ryan and Paul O’Grady. She will serve on the Policy and Community Relations Committees.

KEEP FIRE HYDRANTS CLEAR

I'd like to share a reminder from the Garden City Fire Department regarding the importance of keeping fire hydrants clear during the winter months: Many hydrants near homes and businesses get buried under a snow pile in winter months. Clearing a three-foot area around the hydrant in your yard or your neighbor's yard could be life saving. The few minutes it takes could truly make the difference for you and/or your neighbor. Please join the Garden City Volunteer Firefighters in encouraging your friends and neighbors to “adopt a fire hydrant” near their home. There are about 1,000 fire hydrants in Garden City!
